Glossary

 

ARC  Alarm Receiving Centre: a secure 24-hour location designed and approved to receive and action signals from fire and security signalling systems
CCTV     Closed Circuit Television
CD-ROM     A blank Compact Disk (CD) on which short video clips may be written for archiving or evidence 
CSR  Construction Skills Register: a register of construction industry workers living in Northern Ireland who have successfully completed a regular industry related and approved health and safety training course.
DVD-ROM  A  blank Digital Video Disk (DVD) on which multiple or longer video clips may be written
DDA  Disability Discrimination Act which includes legislation on access for disabled to buildings
EAS  Electronic Article Surveillance, also known as a ‘tagging system’
EPOS  Electronic Point Of Sale, more commonly known as an ‘electronic till’
GPRS  General Packet Radio Service:  a data signalling system on mobile phone communications networks
GSM  Global System for Mobile Communications: the most common type of mobile phone network
HD  High Definition: a technology used to produce and display high resolution images
IP  Internet Protocol: the method by which information is exchanged by any two pieces of equipment on a computer network
Keyholder  A person or company nominated to hold keys for protected premises and to respond to activations
LAN  Local Area Network: a computer network within a building or complex
LCD  Liquid Crystal Display: a technology used to produce slimline televisions and CCTV monitors
LED  Light Emitting Diode: used to provide low energy infra-red lighting for cameras
PC   Personal computer
POS  Point Of Sale: also known as EPOS
PSNI  Police Service of Northern Ireland
PTZ  Pan Tilt and Zoom: used to describe the functions of a remotely controlled camera
URN  Unique Reference Number: issued by the PSNI to a premises which has a ‘police calling’ alarm system. Anyone writing to the Police about an alarm system must quote the URN which refers to the building in question
SIM  Subscriber Information Module: the card used to store identification and signalling data on a device designed to communicate on a mobile phone network
VOIP  Voice Over IP: transmitted via broadband or IP networks
WAN Wide Area Network: a computer network used by large organisations to link buildings in various locations including worldwide
