Many of our intruder and fire alarm customers use remote signalling to our alarm receiving centre (ARC) as a means of notifying them and the police or fire service of the activation of their intruder alarm, personal attack buttons, fire alarm system or in some cases of freezer failure in retail.

Most of these systems have traditionally used the BT public switched telephone network (PSTN) which utilised mostly copper cables as either the sole transmission path or one of two paths.

The UK government announced in 2017 that all telephone and broadband providers would be required to upgrade their old PSTN networks throughout the UK to Internet Protocol (IP) using mostly fibre optic cabling.

This was aimed at improving the availability and speed of broadband and consequently of improving telephone services and options using voice over IP (VOIP) technology.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?
The PSTN switch off is due to complete in 2025
The rollout of the new technology by telephone and broadband network providers began in 2020, and although initially slowed somewhat by Covid 19 restrictions, the rollout is still scheduled to complete on an exchange by exchange basis by the original target date of 2025. Some exchanges in Northern Ireland have already been changed over whilst the remainder will be by 2025. This is a compulsory changeover which could be likened to the switchover from analogue to digital television.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
What does this switch over mean for new and existing Scan Alarms customers?
We in Scan Alarms are advising customers whether an equipment update will be necessary during planned maintenance visits and of the action to be taken. We've provided advice below for new and existing customers.
New Customers

If you are a new customer considering Scan Alarms as your professional accredited fire and security systems provider, we will automatically give you the best professional advice and recommend remote signalling options which do not use the old PSTN system as a signalling path.

Existing Customers

If you are an existing customer, you may have a signalling system which still uses the old PSTN system and at some point, you will be given a few weeks’ notice by your telephone and broadband provider of their intention to withdraw your PSTN service and replace it with an IP only solution. At that point, if you have not already upgraded your old remote alarm signalling equipment, your PSTN signalling equipment will cease to work. This will not only prevent your alarm system from transmitting activations to the ARC for action, but it could invalidate your burglary insurance cover.

Have you received a switch over notification from your telephone and broadband provider?
We in Scan Alarms are advising customers whether an equipment update will be necessary during planned maintenance visits and of the action to be taken. If however, you receive a notification of your imminent PSTN changeover to IP by your telephone/broadband provider before we have advised you, please contact our office as soon as possible during normal working hours and our team can advise on whether an equipment upgrade is required for your particular system.

Advice and Guidance for the upcoming PSTN switch off
Please remember, the new generation signalling equipment has to be ordered by us via the alarm receiving centre from the equipment manufacturer and it arrives with Scan Alarms pre-configured for your specific application and site. We then arrange a slot in an extremely busy engineering calendar to fit and commission the equipment at a time when this is being organised for several thousand customers. Therefore, we need you to provide us with as much advance notice of your line changeover date as possible to have the best prospects of you not being left without remote signalling for a lengthy period.
